Samajam Sampradayam

While on one hand the Samajam holds the traditional concepts and practices dearly, on the other, it has always been on the search and re-searches for innovations.

Samajam started the practice of Chikitsa Yogam, an assembly or panel of physicians to discuss and find solutions to chronic ailments, a practice unheard so far in Ayurveda. Samajam follows the practice even today. This panel is the back bone of Samajam Sampradayam.

Many institutions in modern times follow the Samajam practice of a Chikitsa Yogam, a panel of physicians to discuss and find solutions to chronic disorders.

Another innovation to Samajam's credit was the “Sequential development and application of Ayurvedic therapies on diseases”. It was about 9 decades ago that Samajam introduced the systematized practices of Panchakarma and specialized Kerala therapies. It tells about the application of a set of therapies in a logical sequence than the haphazard introduction of some therapy on the patient, while treating diseases of different origin and of different caliber. It also tells about the control over pressure, time, speed, heat and direction of a therapy while it is executed. This system, the Samajam Sampradayam, was a step further in the development history of Ayurveda.

Most of the institutions today follow “Samajam Sampradayam” (the methodology of Samajam).

Swastha Vritham

The shortest, Surest way to better health.

Very few things survived the test of time, Ayurveda has!

Of obscure origin traced even as far back as the time of the Indus-Valley civilization of 4500BC or before, this science of life, popularly known as Ayurveda got its footing through the Vedic period of the Rig and the Atharva Veda.

Structured as a medical system to practice by Charaka and Susrutha, this oldest life science is also the foremost one in defining specialties, a thing happened an awesome 2000 years before to the rudimentary development of the specialization spectra in modern medicine.

One of the greatest contributions of the Indian Civilization to the Mankind, the Ayurveda practices its principles of health & illnesses through two complimentary entities namely Athuravrutha (internal medicine) and Swasthavrutha (Preventive medicine).

The “Swasthavrutha” of Ayurveda has put enormous information regarding preservation and promotion of good health. It talks about Daily regimen, Seasonal regimen, Personality traits and life styles to follow, epidemic prevention, Ageing, degeneration and rejuvenative methods, physical and psychological health and of individual potential, creativity and ways to succeed in life.

The “Swasthavrutha” of Ayurveda in practice is known as “Sukha chikitsa” where the word “Sukha” stands for health and happiness. It is generally believed of the execution of a series of Ayurvedic therapies including the famous “Pancha Karma” of Ayurveda for preventive health care.

In recent times, many institutions in Kerala and elsewhere have come up with a number of health care packages ranging from a few hours of execution to a long period as long as two calendar months! Some of these packages are good to experience but most of them however are a trivial attempt to snatch the money, legally!!
Health care institutions of questionable credentials, some even more mysterious than the most mystic ayurveda itself, can however mesmerize even an Albert Einstein with an armada of well-designed web sites, brochures, comfortable and often lush-green surroundings and silver-tongued business executives.
The “privileged client” who when walks out of the “health resort” after experiencing “an exceptional orchestra of health care” with mud, milk, oil and everything in between, designed of course “exclusively” to help him off money and weight, readily believes every trash could be Ayurveda.

And, this particular species of “Sukha Chikitsa” is everywhere to be seen especially in the months of monsoon and tourism seasons and is about to becoming a cult by itself.

Stung by this blatant abuse of Ayurveda by opportunists, the foremost Ayurvedic institution in India, the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam of a century plus experience, expertise and service has for the first time come up with a standardized Health care therapy for the health savvy men and women.

Titled as “Swasthavrutham Sukha Chikitsa”, the programme is not the run- of-the mill variation, nor designed out of the blue moon to earn a fast buck and then fade out, but a package of exceptional health care potential promising long time health benefits.

Somewhat ten years before the Samajam had undertaken a study on the preventive health care principles of Ayurveda, which finally resulted in the fine-tuning of a finest health protection programme under the title “Swasthavrutham Sukha Chikitsa”.

The “Swasthavrutham Sukha Chikitsa” of Samajam has two complimentary components - therapies and life style management. The former is designed for immediate health benefits and the latter is for long-term health benefits.
In this programme the therapies are limited by 10 days in time. Whereas, a person spend just 1½ hrs a day each in which a series of Ayurveda therapies in accordance with the body constitution and that of the Body-Mass-index of the person are employed. These are meant for the Detoxification of the cells and tissues in the body.

By the end of 10 days, the person subsequently gets a set of written instructions which are designed for controlling the existing life style of the person for better and long term health benefits.

These instructions usually cover food habits, exercise, sleep, yoga, sex, personality, hygiene, prevention of accelerated ageing and degeneration, negating the influences of environmental pollution, Alcoholic or tobacco toxicity if any, prayer and meditation for better psychological frame, harnessing the intellectual and creative potential, strengthening the familial and social ties, and the like to bring out of the best out of each and every individual. This helps the person to live the life optimally and wholesome.

The programme cannot be extended or shortened as it is limited by 10 days. It also includes a life-style management directive that suits every individual in his or her own surroundings, which doesn't jeopardize one's own ambitions or derails one's own responsibilities in life, which can be practiced comfortably at one's own home or work place in Kochi, Kolkatha or Kingston, a thing unheard so far! Further, the programme is not open to all and sundry, as it is meant for the men and non-pregnant women in the 30-60 age group.

The programme aims at improving general health, immunity, complexion, vitality and endurance. It regulates the digestive and metabolic functions of the body. It reduces the environmental toxicity, Alcoholic toxicity, tobacco toxicity, metabolic toxicity, obesity, and raised levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, stress, strain & tension, insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome and mood disturbances.

A pioneering institution in the field of Ayurveda, the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam r, has finally brought out a pioneering preventive health care package, the Swasthavrutham Sukha Chikitsa” for immediate and long-term health benefits.

It is Ayurveda in practice and it has to be experienced to believe.
It is also hoped that the health resorts will follow and modify the pattern through scientific lines, so as, the innocent “client” shall be beneficed enormously on one hand and the Science of Ayurveda, on the other could become much universal.

Medicines

Samajam Touch

The century old system of manufacturing is still followed in Samajam. The heat has to be controlled and hence the fire wood has to be Tamarind. The vessel made of fine Bronze with strict control over its proportion of alloy. The herbs have to be fresh. And top of all the person in supervision should have the integrity. Modern machines may do wonders. But Ayurveda products are not the usual run of the mill stuff. Ayurveda requires a personal touch to every medicine. And that’s the quality assurance people expect from Samajam as Samajam has never disappointed anyone for over a century.

Some of the medicines, for instance Saraswatha Brahmi Gritham, a medicine for boosting memory and for throat disorders, the Ghee, distilled and purified butter, is made from the milk of a single cow rather than the milk purchased from the open market which is a mixture of all sorts of milk. Samajam strictly observes that it is from the same cow and not from different cows. Samajam strictly believe in the true fact that health Care is not an industry and that it is a part of the responsibility of every human being to help the other. Charity comes only next to health.

Truth will survive. False also may survive. but the life of truth is eternal. And Samajam believes in that. It will not take any more time for the public to be with the truth ever though false will have more frills.

The medicines prepared are mainly for the patients both IP and OP. It is made available to all the centres of Samajam and to a handful of registered agencies. OTC, over-the-counter products or neutraseutical products of confusing claims are neither prepared nor served at the Samajam. But Samajam has its own innumerable formulations which are the products of a century old research and tradition. However all products are available only on ethical lines.

Samajam is perhaps the only institution where the sale of medicine is only second to the treatment and health care. Some of the well known institutions run the hospital with a primary motive of selling the medicines. The trade and commerce involved in Ayurveda today, have taken away a lot of ethics from this age old science.

Proprietary

Samajam has some rare traditional preparation proprietary to Samajam. These are normally not listed in any of the books but in practice for the last 100 years . Formulation of this genre are still prepared in Samajam. Contributed by Thriprangod Parameswaran Mooss to Kuttancherry Mooss to Thirunavaya Mooss to Dr. Rajagopal these medicines with its secret formula are the out come of their observations and findings clubbed with the traditional application.

Over a million patients have thanked Samajam for the relief from their illness, pain and suffering. And these patients have contributed to the growth of ayurveda in terms of updating the medicines.

Even in the preparation of a simple medicinal cosmetic Kajal, an eye liner, Samajam adopts these strict and stringent measures to adhere to the conventional preparation of Ghee based sooth. Whether it be a complicated Moordha Choornam or a Simple Massage oil the quality in Samajam will be a guideline for others.
Samajam maintains its personal physical touch to every medicine it produces. Moreover, as the Lord Dhanwanthari is considered to be the Lord of medicines, Samajam offers the preparations to Lord Ganesh, the Lord of Obstruction for his blessings before it is sent for use.

The 300 odd medicines prepared in Samajam fall into various categories like Asavams, Arishtams, Grithams, Vadakams, Choornams etc.

The legacy

Commercialization has never been in the minds of the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, it shall never be, too. Like the lone banyan tree standing on the scorching sun on the side of the long stretch of road to comfort the weary traveler, the Samajam stands to comfort the sick and weak, with the strength gained out of the 5000 years old heritage wisdom of India, the Ayurveda of mankind.
Competition has never been in the minds of the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, it shall never been too. Like the rain cloud that

showers over the dry-parched land to spring life on earth, the Samajam stands well high in the sky to shower all its knowledge and experience to all who are in need. There is no bias. There is no ulterior motives. And, there is nothing that won't be above board.

The standard and the methodology of Samajam, be it on conducting treatments or imparting knowledge, be it on preparing medicines or treating a disease, be it on introducing innovative programmes or undertaking research activities, are adopted by many and being constantly compared by many more.

History

Established a hundred years before, the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam is a singular organization in preserving and promoting the principles and practices of Ayurvedic Medicine, internationally. Running on charitable lines with no profit - no loss motto, the Samajam today is engaged in Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Dispensaries, Teaching & Training programmes, Research & Development activities, Cultivation of medicinal plants & Manufacture of herbal medicines, Ayurveda Therapeutics and Rejuvenation Practices, Panchakarma & related therapies, and most importantly in Preventive Health Care concepts. Branched out to 7 centers including to the Andamans, the Samajam caters to the needs of a large population from different parts of India and abroad.

Beyond commercialization and competition, Samajam still remains on ethical lines in Medical Practice.

A hundred years before two princely states in Kerala, the Kochi and the Malabar were always at enmity and the bone of their contention was the loss of the 'Perumpadappu Swaroopam' of Kochi to the Zamorins of Malabar. They never met in peace but in war; and, a historic exception was made once when they met, not to discuss any princely or royal matters but to create an organization to serve the public on health related matters and, thus formed the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam.

Zamorin of Calicut

Maharaja of Cochin

In 1902, the first ever congress of the Samajam was convened at Chalappuram in Kozhikode. The first annual meeting witnessed the presence of the Manavikrama Ettan Raja, the Zamorin of Calicut and the Ramavarma Appan Thampuran, the 6th Prince, the Kunjunnithampuran of the Kochi State. The assemblage also included the presence of stalwarts like Kochunni Thampuran, Kavalappara Mooppil Nair, Chirakkal Ramavarma Ilaya Raja, K.C. Veerarayan Raja, Kollankottu Raja, Vasudeva Raja, Kuroor Damodaran Namboodirippad, Thriprangod Parameswaran Mooss,  Rao Bahadhur M.C. Krishna Varma Raja, Vengayil Kunji Raman Nair and P.S. Warrier. The first ever administrative body of the Samajam was formed thus with Sri. K.R. Padmanabha Iyer becoming its first Secretary. And, at this first annual meeting, the name “Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam” was introduced, 55 years before the State of Kerala was formed
